There are many different types of lavender in Provence; some which grow naturally, but also some that are cultivated for their essential oil, these being fine lavender, aspic and lavandin. Lavender blooms in June and July, but lavender distilleries and museums are open all year round, where you can buy lavender essential oil and by-products to savour the smell of Provençal summer.

Stage 1: Avignon > Musée de la Lavande in Coustellet

15 minutes from the “Plus Beau Village de France”: Gordes, the Musée de la Lavande offers tours of its stills exhibition, workshops, experiences and events to learn all about the history of fine provençal lavender.

Stage 2: Musée de la lavande > Plateau Des Claparèdes and Les Agnels Distillery

25 km, around 25 minutes – coach parking

At the foot of the Luberon massif, between the dry-stone huts known as the “bories” and the lavandin, stroll across quintessentially provençal landscapes, lulled by the gentle song of the cicadas.

Les Agnels organic distillery: since 1895, the Agnel family has passed on its passion and knowledge of lavender growing. Today, they invite you to watch a real lavender distillation and the production of essential oils and floral waters.

From the start of July, the lavender and lavandin fields of Pays du Sault are in full bloom, awakening the senses of visitors from all over the world. Explore the vast plateau and mosaic countryside, made up of lavender fields and einkorn wheat.

Stop 1: Aroma’Plantes Distillery
Situated on the foothills of Mont Ventoux, at an altitude of 750 metres, AROMA’PLANTES is a family-run organic farm, specialising in the production of aromatic and medicinal plants. They organise walks, visits and lavender workshops.

Stop 2 – Chemin des lavandes
Beginning in Sault, the capital of lavender, this well-established route (which can be completed by foot, by bike or by car), allows you to discover all facets of this provençal symbol, whatever the season. Signs and signposting mark out the route. Circuit of 5.5 km.
 
Other great things to see in and around Sault: Nougaterie Boyer, master nougat confectioner since 1887 and the Gorges de la Nesque, a great, wild canyon with caves, ideal for hiking and cycling.
