This is the wine school Avignon has been waiting for, so it can fully embrace its reputation as the capital of Côtes du Rhône wines. The school opened in November 2017 in the magnificent Carré du Palais building opposite the Pope’s Palace. Its raison d’être is to showcase all the variety of the Rhone Valley vineyards to beginners and connoisseurs alike.
The superb 18th-century Calvet de la Palun townhouse – one of the last houses built in papal Avignon and former home to the Banque de France – is an ideal setting for visitors to find out about the wonderful A.O.C. wines produced in the Côtes du Rhône vineyards. Inter-Rhône got the project up and running with backing from the City of Avignon, and spring 2017 finally saw the unveiling of a bistro and wine bar dedicated to the impressive variety of Côtes du Rhône appellations.
The wine school opened its doors in November 2017. Regular tasting workshops are led by trainers from the prestigious Université du Vin in Suze la Rousse, and special sessions can be booked for small groups. This new space is designed to be accessible and conducive to learning, with clear, well-designed materials and a relaxed atmosphere during the sessions.
Low season – two sessions per week in French: an introductory wine tasting workshop on Friday evenings, a Saturday morning session focussing on a specific aspect of Côtes du Rhône wines, and a food and wine pairing workshop one Saturday a month.
Classes are in French (check the calendar) and cover different topics, including: introduction to the Gigondas appellation; the Grenache grape variety; and the Rhone Valley’s north-south battle.
April to June: three sessions a week, two in French (Friday evenings and Saturday mornings) and one in English (Saturday evenings).
July and August: four sessions a week, two in French (Friday evenings and Saturday mornings) and two in English (Wednesday and Saturday evenings).
September’s programme is currently being scheduled.
